I actually have a real Best Friends cartridge, not to be biased or anything but if you don't have a particular breed in mind, try that one out first. As many have mentioned already, all of the Nintendogs play the same way. As for unlocking the dogs . . . well, one quick way to do that is just get a buddy do the bark mode thing with you - their dog will show up in the kennels if you don't already have it. Not too sure how this would work with the computer emulators though, sorry.
The one I recommend downloading is best friends ^.^ I have every breed of dog on that one

They are all pretty much the same, except you start out with different dogs, and there's a few items on each one that are different.
You should pick the one with the breeds you like most, until you can unlock the other ones. Each game also has a different order of unlocking the dogs.
What is the difference?? which one should be recomended to download?
