WinRAR Wackiness
F
Could somebody please tell me how come all of a sudden WinRAR doesn't want to recognize my RAR files?
M
Are these newly downloaded or one's you had before playing up?
L
im guessing the file associations are screwed, easiest solution is reinstall winrar.
F
Well to answer mds64, both. And to answer you Looney I've have reinstalled it.
L
is it the latest version? what happens when you double click a rar file?
F
They all still work like they're supposed to. It's the icon that's screwy. Some look normal, where some look like this:http://i33.tinypic.com/f254xu.png

thats windows messing up then.

Go into your folder options and to file types, and make sure it still has the correct Icon for RAR files.Sometimes RAR files that are split into multiple pieces are given extensions like .r01 through .r99, and these .r01 through .r99 files are not associated correctly with WinRAR by default, and will appear as a blank file with no default icon.

They don't anymore Tirith. Maybe I should just wipe my HD and start over?! For me it's no big deal because I'm handicapped and can't work so I've literally got all the time in the world! ;v)

All you have to do is put the Icon file back. Go to the file types, select RAR, change the Icon. The Icon should be stored with the exe file for the WinRAR program. So just browse to the WinRAR directory to find the usual WinRAR Icon and change it to it.
F
That didn't work either. Looks like I'm gonig to have to wipe my HD afterall. Thanx anyway! ;v)
M
I hope you didn't...If I know what type of files they are here is what I do...right click-open with. The file icons shall change after awhile-this is how I do it-rar and 7zip files are easily fixed like this.I hope you didn't go extreme and do a entire wipe :(

I had a similar issue, but I still managed to open them by opening them through another working Winrar archive, rather than by itself. Still, it looks like yours won't be fixed so easily . . . hope this helps though
F
I did wipe my HD. It's OK though. I keep Windows on my internal HD and my external 500 gig is for my computer life! ;v)
T
But this issue is a windows setting issue, a registry issue. Wiping the non-OS portions of your HDD shouldn't have any effect on it.
F
No Tirith, when I say wipe my HD I mean whip out my old Windows XP installation disc and FORMAT my HD and then reinstall everything! ;v) Now there's no longer anything making an icky mess! ;v0
