Windows 7, is it really worth it?

I'm starting to realize how crap Vista really is & I'm considering switching to another windows OS, XP was the best, but I don't know if it is anymore. So I thought about about Windows 7 and it's actually been pretty good so far, apparently.
So should I make the switch?

not yet, I would wait until the official retail release has been available for at least a month first, although if possible wait for the first service pack. It gives M$ time to fix most of the major bugs.

Hmm, good point.

I don't think so. One of my colleagues at work says some of Win95 errors still keep bugging him in Win7. also he says if your program cant run on XP it sometimes doesn't run.BTW. they say win7 boots faster than ANY previous windowz, my 386 with Win3.11 boots twice as fast as Win7 on a quad-core with 8gb ram

Where have you been? They've said that for every version of windows they ever made.

let's put it this way for windows 7,
if you liked vista then you'll like windows 7 easily.
if you didn't like vista then you won't like windows 7 that much.i don't really see much reason to update to any other os other then to get direct x10,11 or to solve some hardware problems like the ram limit on 32bit os. microsoft should have stayed in xp and transfered everything into 64bit. once 64bit has become well established in win xp, the transition to a new os would be less problematic [i least i hope so].the one problem with vista and windows 7 is drm and the massive fu requirements for the hardware.

windows 7 is a considerable improvement on vista, there is no denying that.

i'm gonna have to disagree with you on that one. i, for one, hated vista. however i love windows 7.
i wouldn't dump linux as my primary OS for it, but it's certainly worth the space it takes for a dual boot. (vista was not)

That's not exactly accurate, I absolutely hated Vista but I'm in love with Windows 7. They took all the annoying elements and removed them or optimized them, there's no reason to upgrade just for the hell of it, but if you're doing a reformat anyway then put on Windows 7.

Downgrade to XP.
Seriously.Windows 7 is like Vista with some new fancy features, a docking station(Did it really took that long for Microsoft to have that), and some small speedups. Most games I've tried don't work, the ones that do either ran at the same speed as XP, or ran slower.

Windows 7 is pretty much the best Microsoft OS I've used to date. Excellent condition at launch, although it is apparantly vista sp2 with a new look, but still. Windows 7 is worth it

Yeah, I agree. I'm gonna stick with XP for the time being, and maybe wait a year for the official release (so that some bugs will be dealt with, update drivers and better security).

that explains it all.here are a few things to read,
http://www.pcworld.com/article/153624/under_the_hood_windows_7_is_vistas_twin.html"Within 5 minutes of installation it was immediately obvious to me -- Windows 7 is the best Vista Service Pack ever!" jeff atwood [http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/001290.html]windows 7 is a repatch of vista with a new name.here are some more things to consider,
http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=2456http://www.roughlydrafted.com/2009/07/25/the-vista-myth-why-windows-7-wont-turn-microsoft-around/we'll see the results of windows 7 when it gets released later on this year [october 2009]. btw, if demand for windows 7 and vista is low, then we'll still be with dx9 for a while.

like seph said, if your gonna reformat your PC anyway, install windows 7, it's a lot better and faster than vista and it looks cooler, it's also easier to use.

If I have a computer/laptop that can run windows 7 well, will it be faster than XP?

Windows 7 is vista with the bugs taken out. It also has very few drivers.
