WASHINGTON — The United States has discovered nearly $1 trillion in untapped mineral deposits in Afghanistan, far beyond any previously known reserves and enough to fundamentally alter the Afghan economy and perhaps the Afghan war itself, according to senior American government officials.
You do know what this means, right? And i think the the U.S government will be back on the top, if they will do what i think they would or should do...

I would like to know what scientists were doing searching for minerals in a war zone
obviously they have known for a while and its part of the reason they are still there

Of course. The thing here is, who would dominate on that find? the U.S or China? I bet the U.S would lose on that deal if they pulled out their troops and let the Afghans rule themselves.

That's why they aren't going to pull out.

I was amused at reports of corruption in the Afghan government concerning the US. Why? Because the more liberal, western-friendly politicians are paid off by the West already. Basically, the aim is to get the guy with the right sort of corruption (see: paid off by us rather than the Taliban) into government so they can mine these deposits.
