when i play the ds lite with the r4i card do i have to turn the console off and on again to get back to the start menu to choose a different game or am i being really dumb here

Have you upgraded your dsi recently?As in the system's firmware-that blocks out flash carts unless they have been upgraded, not sure if the r4 has such an update.

He means like a Soft-Reset, Hypnos.Some cards support soft-reset, others don't. A+B+Y+X+L+R is the most common Soft-Reset combo.

how exactly does one get all those buttons pressed because i can barely get the face buttons down...

How old are you? 5? :) (I mean this in terms of the size of your thumb, not your mental capacity).The DS A, B, X, Y buttons are easily covered by the thumb all at once, they form a square that is barely half an inch on each side. The L and R buttons are hit with the index fingers like usual. Easily hit all at once.

sorry, i thought the gap was wider the last time i held my ds...

can't remember but the old r4 soft rest was something like both triggers and A or maybe start of something.hang on just googled it and it's L+B+START+SELECT
