R4i problems

I bought an R4i 1.4 recently but I can't get it to work. When I put it in my DSi and click on the icon to start it my bottom screen flashes then goes black and the top screen just stays white. When I put it in my original DS it loads as if my system is on auto mode and just says loading on the top screen but never actually finishes.I have tried downloading the firmware from several places and none of them work.
