Should I update my firmware from 1.18 to the latest one? And what are the benefits
And I've heard rumors that the new firmwares are bogus...Is that true?

There is a new unofficial (or at least, non-original team) R4 firmware.
http://www.r4li.com/And there is also Ysmenu.
http://forum.romulation.net/index.php?topic=27617.0You should update to one of them, 1.18 is outdated and can't run many new games.
