PS3/Xbox 360 - Free Games

Just wondering how to get free games on either the PS3 or the 360.I know that the PS3 needs to be on 3.55 or something like that, but then I'm blank.
So if one of you could point me to a guide or something, that'd be appreciated.Also, I'm thinking of just getting a cheap $80 pre-owned PS3/Xbox 360, and it wouldn't have large storage, so can I attach an external drive?
Because I've got a spare 1 TB HDD lying around, so that might come in handy...Thanks in advance.
