L
boot from your windows installation disc, when it gives you the option to press 'r' for recovery console, press 'r'. once you're in the recovery console and have the command prompt type 'fixmbr', say yes if it asks you to confirm, then reboot when it tells you to. Be more careful in future.
K
can i use a iso and boot it from a usb?, or use somthing like mbr fix?,the realy sad thing is that i cant evan boot from the drive iinstalled ubuntu on so no im stuck with a live system
L
no you can't boot from an ISO, you will have to burn it.
K
T_T no cd burner, could i use a bootable usb?. could something like
mbrfix do the trick
L
if you format the USB and copy the exact directory structure of the windows CD (all files, including hidden ones) then it may be possible to boot from it.
K
what format?
S
copy/paste fomat
K
whats copy past format?
L
format as in erase everything on it, then copy the entire CD onto it.
K
ok thanks im gona try and hunt down a windows xp pro iso

If you want to fix the MBR, I'd go download something like Ultimate Boot CD/ UBCD4Win. It's capable of booting from usb, and there are several mbrfix utilities in the package. It is an overall useful thing to have, IMO.
K
most of them need backups wich i cant make is there any that already have the windows mbr?

i have found that there are certain things you can and can't do with a usb device.
i one time tried to run windows from a usb hard drive and it wouldn't load. windows ran on a portable 2.5" hard drives. it loaded up the windows logo [the black screen with the progress bar] i believe and then some sort of an error.
K
i learned the hard way i thought that the grub mbr would load on the external hard drive but it loaded on my internal hard drive instead
L
Always on the first hard drive.
K
will
this work, and is it a good place to download files?(free of viruses Trojans, malware)
L
yes but you need to know the partition number that windows is on. as for safe, I don't know.
K
how do i find out what number windows is on?
L
it should tell you if you follow the instructions given, its a matter of if you can understand the information it gives you.
