Planing on buying a new computer
M
Wow it seems AlienWare have alot of issues.
L
So far I have spent about £3,000 on my computer over the last 3 years. It originally cost £2,000, but since then it's had a new motherboard, a new case, two upgraded graphics cards, a SCSI controller and two 15kRPM disks, two new storage drives, 4 new optical drives (they kept dying) and a new soundcard and more ram. My X-FI lasted 3 years before starting to have problems, the problems started after I replaced my dual geforce 7800 GTX SLI set up with a geforce 8800 GTX. Self-build is the way to go, and it's really not all that difficult.

manny2260I was looking around and found this http://reviews.cnet.com/4321-3118_7-6623901.html?tag=prmo1. I am thinking of buying the Gateway GT5674 please keep in mind that I use Photoshop very often and other similar programs. What do you think of this computer do you think it is fit for my uses (occasional gaming,Browsing, and programs such as microsoft office and photoshop.)
i agree with loony on this.. ive had a gateway and it never was great with maintnence... if youa re going to dish out the cash for a enw comp i would recomend lenovo. those comps are like tanks.
M
I've decided to build my own which seems to be cheaper and also gives you a much greater level of customization. But when the time does come for me to start buying my parts Ill post again. Hopefully Loony will be willing to help, who better than RomUlation's tech. guru to help me build my dream machine!
L
yeah no problem. As it happens, I've found pictures I took 3 years ago when I built this machine so I might get around to doing a tutorial.

Almolol nah 360 for games, PC for porn and anything illegal.
LOL THAT SERIOUSLY IS FREAKIN' FUNNY

My plan in next 2 year is to buy 2x 1GB DDR PC3200 and Creative SoundBlaster Audigy.

both of which are already considerably out of date.

tis the season to be building new rigs, it seems :)you know how it is, you shell out £180 on that new intel processor, and £200 on the latest DDR3 mobo. and a hefty amount on dual channel DDR3 ram, only to find it's going to be superseded by new DDR3 ram in the next month, meanwhile intel core i7 is pking its head around the next corner ;Di was on messenger with my friend for about an hour with him bawling about this. i told him to shut up and build a server, in the end.
L
i7 won't be available for a while yet.

nooby question from me: when you want a new desktop computer do you buy parts to assemble or do you buy a whole set?
L
what do you mean by a 'whole set'? If you mean a prebuilt computer, then I buy parts to assemble.
A
Prebuilt computers are usually sold in the usual tech shops, custom built means you have to buy everything you want separate (also making sure they're compatible with each other), with cases and PSUs and so on, and then put it together yourself. I've only ever done one myself.

I have to agree. I'm building myself a PC October-ish, and it works out to be around $500. This works out good, seeing as the parts in it if you bought this PC retail, would be $700+.
Plus I'm getting all my parts from a really good and well priced store. nVidia 8600gt for $60 ;D
X
so its better to buy parts to assemble than to buy pre-built computers. i need to read a lot before i can cut costs
L
it can cut costs, in my case it cost more but the machine was up to date for a lot longer. Additionally you get exactly what you want, not some manufacturer's guess at what you might want.
E
it is always cheaper as to find the exact same thing as you want would cost at least twice as much. (aart from in loony's case with his crazy machines)
but then again if you don't know what you are doin and break some parts as you put it together it will cost.
and anyway most of the time your just paying for names and software.
if you intend to buy it all legaly it will cost more then buying a pc from a shop but if you allready have it or can get it by other means then it is cheaper. as you will need an OS microsoft office and othe shit like that.
L
hardware wise it won't be more expensive, just the OS as windows is heavily subsidised by computer manufacturers.
E
thats what i just said!!!! :Dlets look at it this way i just made a pc. a nice little runner nothing great just something that will get me by has a dual core medrange graphics card enough ram big hdd good case+psu. it cost me half as much exactly then the same spec from a shop althogh it has better quality parts as i could choose them.
but if i had baught all the software it would of cost the same.

Yes I know, but your first post wasn't quite clear on that.
