Not good in analyzing math problems XD

Here's the given problem:One runner took 3 min 45 sec to complete a race and another runner required 4 min to run the same race. The rate of the faster runner is 0.4 m/sec more than the rate of the slower runner. Find their rates.EDIT: Show Solution. :)

x=first runner time
y=second runner timelets skip the solution
x 's rate is : 49 mp/h
y 's rate is : 46 mp/him confident ....dont crush my dreams

no-one can run at 40+ mph, thats the speed of a lion/tiger.showing working is critical.You need to work out the distance they ran in order to calculate their speeds.

Is it just me, or is this a comparative dervivation problem? I spent 5 minutes on it and filled two post-it notes. I'll need the distance.

i was wondering how to find the distance, is it possible to solve w/o the distance?

You can find the distance as it gives you a total time and a rate of 0.4m/s.

You need to use a system of equations.Say x is the distance of the track.y = runner 1 speed
z = runner 2 speedTurn all the time into seconds to be easier to work with.Runner 1 time = 225 seconds
Runner 2 time = 240 secondsy = x/225
z = x/240z = y + 0.4
y = z - 0.4z - 0.4 = x/225
z = (x/225) - 0.4x/240 = x/225 - 0.4Solve for x, and you have your distance.
Then with the distance and time, just find the speeds of the two runners.

wow it realy doesent mater how fast they went they also could have just gone 1 and the other 0.8 shees its not a ball buster...
