timmy1991Octocore, they have those now?
Sorry that's the only thing I really got out of your post Loony...I don't see why people need 2-4 cores for games. I can play a lot of the newer games on decent settings on my Dell, with a 3GHZ pentium 4.
they have 12 core now. Games do not need anything more than dual core, regular usage is fine with dual or quad core. (its multasking that benefits from more cores up to quad, games don't). my computer has two quad core processors making it octocore. AMD have fairly recently released single processors with 12 cores.

Thats just insane... and to think that computers the size of buildings had as much processing power as a modern calculator in the 60's

Technology will continue to advance. In 100 years, it'll blow away what we have today. Kids will look back and say "They used to have that?"

They will be able to run Crysis at max on their cell phones... If they don't have something better than those by then

Not necessarily for gaming, man. It's load distribution that's the big deal. Your single core might not do to badly in modern gaming at the moment but considering it can only handle so many processes, you're not going to be able to multi-task very efficiently. Think of it like a bathtub, one tap can only move so much water into the tub from the mains. Two taps are going to handle more water, and thus are more efficient for moving a given amount of water from the mains into the tub. The cores are the taps, and the water is processes. Games are starting to require more and more processing power, so eventually a single-core isn't going to be able to handle the demands of things like gaming.I do a decent amount of code compilation and graphical design out in the real world, so I got myself a Phenom II X4 955; a decent quad-core processor with a clock of 3.2GHz. I can almost guarantee I'll compile something twice as fast as you since I have a lot of extra power under the proverbial hood. It also handles reasonably well in gaming, but since that wasn't the only consideration I had to make I decided to spend a bit more on something a little more versatile than, say, an Intel Core i5 with a dual-core (I think 560 or something?) which is a very good dedicated gaming processor.

manaseaterBuild your own. Cheaper, better, more stylish.,and you can brag 'Yeah my comp kicks ass. And i built it. Yeah.'
You feel some acheivement when you show off your Gaming PC monster and saying that you built it. Which tells others that you know your stuff (not nessesaraly)Hell, you can even buy parts from cheaper stores (a.k.a. stores at your closest ChinaTown to save even MORE MONEY!)

My phone can play duke nukem 3d and has a 1ghz processor and a 3d graphics chip. (ok so its not naitively 1ghz but it will clock that high if I want it to. I have it scaling between 250mhz and 800mhz normally).
