Is the PS3 region free or region locked?

Reason I'm asking is because I'm thinking of Importing Arcana Heart 3 and I'm afraid I'll waste away money if I find out it's region locked.So does anyone mind filling me in if it's free or locked?

yea, i'm pretty sure it is. many people have been playing demon's souls in english on an asian copy of the game.
that's the only example i got.

Yeah it is. There were some guys at my college I saw playing a Japanese game on a US console.

I watched my friend play the japanese version of Vesperia on his English PS3.

I love how the PS3 is regionfree for games, yet can't play PAL movies on a NTSC console...I'm thinking the reason why you can play Japanese games on a US console is because they're the same region (NTSC).Something to check would be if an NTSC game would work on a PAL console and vice versa.

thats irrelevant, movies use their own region coding system.

that's exactly my point...why would they bother setting up two separate systems when you can just do one.
