How do I register the controls on Project 64 to my USB controller?

I found with mine I got it working easily...All I remember is getting to the settings, mapping it (I have joy pad enabled or something, saved the settings, and I had to load up the config everytime).If I can press a button while configurating it and it would recognise something was pressed, I considered it working :)
