the manga was hmmm a not as good as the anime was, so reading the manga first would just destroy the image of Haruhi
it's like reading a concert, you have to listen to a concert
but I suppose you can go read the manga too, but trust me, go watch the anime, it's way better

Haruhi's episodes were aired in a random order that only made sense after watching the whole season
