graphics isn't the drive for games, so no wii hd

http://kotaku.com/5405667/reggie-wii-2-theories-miss-key-pointthere are games 20 years ago and are still selling and played so why would nintendo worry about hd?here are some games 20 years ago that are still bought and played,
super mario brothers 1-3
metroid 1
bionic commando
castlevania 1-3
tmnt 1-3
zelda 1-2
gradius
final fantasy
sprint series
contra 1-2
duck tales
tetris
...heck you can even go to the gameboy handheld which is not only monotone [various shades of black and white] but very not hd, and you'll find games that are still played.what does this tell you about hd? what this should tell you is that the value of games has gone down and the driving factor is not the quality of the games but the visuals. it means these developers and publishers don't know how to make a good game and all they focus on instead is the technicalities of the game. again, if you watch transformers in blu-ray as opposed to dvd quality, does it make a difference? the answer is no because in the end, both are still the same experience.what this also means is that there is no need for hd on the wii.
hd was a gimmick.

graphic only matter for cinematic games like MGS, Dead Space ect, game that want to present it self as an interactive movie.FPS game also need good graphic because it need to be as detail as possible to simulate the view from the player eyes.however certain game that doesnt require graphic to work, like tetris since it doesnt matter if the game in 2d or 3d you will still be looking at the tetris block.IF nintendo want to complete in new gen market, graphic is a must since most game now day is either a cinematic game or FPS. If Nintendo dont want to upgrade thier graphic thier game would look outdated compare to the rest. Another road Nintendo can do is stay away from game that require graphic to works.

dude, system shock 1-2 was released how long ago on the pc and it's still one of the best games. yet bioshock can't compare. dude, marathon trilogy was released way in the mid 90's and today they are still played. even if you look at fallout, it is still one of the best games to own and play. i don't know of the new fallout game is doing but i can tell you that the original still holds today. people still play counter strike you know and even old quake games and so on and so on. look at golden eye for n64, it was such a great game that people ported the game to the pc and people play it. so something is wrong here.bionic commando was never released for the wii's virtual console and there is a reason. if bionic commando was released on the virtual console and the remake of bionic commando rearmed would flop or fail as it would only suggest that games today have gone down in quality. remember, there are a lot of people who would rather buy the original nes bionic commando game as opposed to the new bionic commando rearmed game. this is why capcom declined for nintendo to releaseing the game for the virtual console. it would be very upsetting knowing that a game made 20 years ago is selling better then the game remade with better hd graphics.

your point is? just because people still value the old stuff, that doesnt mean new stuff is unnessasary. For example i still value cartoons, but that doesnt mean 3D movie sucks.also some people still like old stuff for old time sake, ask any MGS fans and they will tell you MGS is still the best MGS or as any pokemon fans and they will still claim Pokemon Red\Blue is still the best pokemon game ever.

Much agreed. You know what-I would care if the next wii was WEAKER than the current consoles (well maybe a slight step up from the wii) as long as it's still cheap to get games for, only stuck with the wii because it's cheaper to buy 18 games in 9 months than 7 in that time.Plus I'm an idiot when it comes to light gun games :P

Have you played Bionic Commando Rearmed? I know some people prefer the old one, but Rearmed is the best re imagining of a game ever. Even a lot of it's negative criticism is because of it's adherence to it's original game. And Calvin is right, nostalgia does funny things. As much as I love System Shock, it's extremely dated and it's hard to play without a texture pack and a drastic change in it's controls. It's only you're opinion that it doesn't compare. What Bioshock did in comparison to SS1/2 is streamline everything, managing the inventory and occasionally upgrading your stats feels more bothersome then it should be, along with the randomly generated enemies in the environment. Even finding the systems to upgrade your stats were stupidly difficult, if it wasn't for the co-op I probably wouldn't have finished the game.As for Doom/Quake/Marathon or whatever have you. These games have old game mechanics, for all these games, it's just mindless shooting, for Quake, it's mindless twitch shooting. No games other than the old ones offer this type of gameplay.Even Golden eye is dated, the AI, graphics, old game mechanics, all feel old and suffer from it. It's not just the graphics but it's the gameplay limitations that the console had for it. Even that Golden Eye remake on the Source engine offers more than the original, there's a reason for this, because they didn't want it to feel old and dated. Even Perfect Dark is getting a remake on the Xbox 360, this is a great thing because stuff like frame rate on the original makes it feel weak. Some reimaginings of games are made so they can modernize the game to make it relevant again. Golden Eye Source obviously has a graphical upgrade, but it also made the maps better, made the controls a lot better, has online play, and has stuff like Achievements. Perfect dark will have upgraded textures, better modeling, no frame rate problems, better controls, and online play. These are games that are reimagined so that they can make the game better.

They're both the same shitty movie but they're different both visually and audibly, this boost in visual and audio clarity offers a better and enhanced experience versus the DVD quality. For a even better picture, watch any Bluray movie on a 120 Hz TV, it's almost scary watching a movie on those types of televisions, the movement is so clear. Having an experience with something combines all features of something, that includes the feel it gives to the viewer, the quality of the visuals/audio and all that jazz. It's a combination of all these things, gameplay/feel isn't the only thing that determines a game or a film.Even for NES or old school games, sprites are timeless. A game like Super Metroid or the first Mario game is still visually pleasing and is beautiful, even now. Versus System Shock 1 and 2, they look absolutely disgusting now a days.

It is the derive. Look at H3 or GeoW2, COD4. Most people started those games becouse they have good graphics.
It is important. Graphics are one of the 5 main parts of the game. Its really pointless that you say better graphics are not necessary. Wouldn't you want to play Mario Galaxy with better graphics? And lemme add, those games are selling becouse they are classics. Not becouse people dont care about graphics.

Graphics mean jack all to me, as long as a game doesn't look like my brother made it it's fine with me.What graphics the gamecube push out are still fine to me, heck that's how I survive playing pc games on my laptop, everything is off XD

from time to time i watch old dvd reruns of transformers and tmnt all from the 80's. when watching them, i've never really focused on the quality of the video that much. what i do focus on was the content of those cartoons, the story, the ideas of the cartoon, etc....simply put, people play games not for the graphics. it was back then when graphics were the focus, but today it's not the case.look at cartoons, there are those in 3d animation and there are those in classic drawn. when people watch these cartoons, they aren't so focused on the proper drawings of the characters but rather the type of entertainment one would find when they watch the cartoon.akira is still favored. gee i wonder why. nostalgia. there are videos that are considered cult classic. why? they are very terrible, have aweful acting or some sort, are outdated, etc.... and people still watch them. why? nostalgia right?!

Of course, gameplay is king but as everyone moves to HD TVs, it's not a bad idea to make games exploit HD. Just because "graphics isn't the drive for games" doesn't mean we should ignore it altogether. Could you imagine how awesome Twilight Princess would be on HD?

again, when people watch tv shows, they aren't watching tv shows because the tv shows in 720/1080i/p but because of the entertainment they will get.when you watch transformers in dvd or in blu-ray it doesn't make a difference because in the end, you get the same entertainment and it is the entertainment of the product which stirs the viewers imagination that makes the end result great.have you ever wonder why you buy a child a toy and they end up playing with the box? the reason why is becauseo of their imagination. imagination is a greater product of entertainment then 720/1080i/p visuals.

That isn't a fair analogy. A more proper comparison for TV shows and movies is special effects. There will always be classics like the Godfather Trilogy but you cannot deny that the better special effects for today's James Bond movies have a great impact against the the old ones from the 60s and 70s.Again, I'm not saying old means bad-I love Dr. No and Goldfinger-but what I'm saying is that we don't need to sacrifice gameplay just to get better looking games. I'm as much a Nintendo fan as you and I totally agree with their philosophy but if they could make great games with HD-quality graphics, why not?Rejecting it from the get go without even seeing anything yet is awfully closed-minded of you.

what nintendo is doing is a very very good thing. what they are doing is eventually going to kill the 360/ps3 but it'll take a longer time because sony and microsoft has a huge pocket. but nintendo will shrink them down and you'll see in the coming years. it's good thing because when the 360/ps3 shrinks, so will the industry and that means more gaming bliss. but of course there will be repercussions, such as people like calvin and ads who may become distraught about the end result and where certain companies may actually decease because they were supporting the wrong side."the better special effects for today's James Bond movies have a great impact against the the old ones from the 60s and 70s"yeah that is true, but you also see something that is similar to video games. what 60's and 70's james bond has that the newer james bond don't have is the james bond experience that you get from the 60's and 70's version as opposed to today, where they use cheap eye candy as the selling point as the james bond experience of today can't offer the same bond experience from the 60's and 70's.the movie fame was released several months ago in theaters and there is something about the new fame movie that makes it not special as opposed to the original fame. why?

Again, you are assuming that making games pretty would automatically affect gameplay negatively. For people for that era, the old 60s James Bond are memorable because they were cutting edge then. The people then undoubtedly thought the special effects then were awesome. A person who loved Super Mario 1 wouldn't stop liking it just because Super Mario Wii came out. In the same vein, anyone who's first experience of Mario is the new Super Mario Wii would probably think Mario 1 is awful.I don't care about PS or Xbox and don't care if Nintendo causes those consoles to die. All I care is that Nintendo sticks to their gameplay focus. I thought I was a fanboy but you-with wanting the PS and Xbox to die by Nintendo's hands-take the cake. Sadly my friend, no argument, regardless how good, will sway you.And to add, one of the bigger reasons Nintendo didn't give the Wii support for HD was so they could sell the Wii for cheaper than th PS and Xbox. A totally wise decision, but not 100% idealistic as you would think.

I first saw the movie in a regular cinema. Then, I went to see it in IMAX, and the difference blew my mind. Anybody who watches a movie like that for the plot is kidding themselves; the visceral viewing experience is what counts. Besides, movies allow one to see the product of other people's imagination, whereas games allow players to utilise their own imagination within the realms of another's.

Nintendo's focus on gameplay can be a bad thing. Convergence of media is the way of the future; the PS3 and X360 both double as media centers and allow for much greater online interactivity, while the Wii lags behind in these areas. Nintendo is actually holding the industry back, here. Pretty much every other new piece of technology involves incorporating various features into something that wouldn't usually have those features; the iPod is a great example of this.Oh, and in case you haven't been paying attention, Nintendo's profits have been plummeting lately. Sony and Microsoft's market share is far from shrinking.
ultra · #10simply put, people play games not for the graphics. it was back then when graphics were the focus, but today it's not the case.
Different people play different games for different reasons. Some play for the plot, some for the gameplay, some for graphics, some for nostalgia and some simply for the ability to say that they have indeed played a particular game. Most people that consider themselves gamers would say that gameplay is the most important, perhaps out of some sense of obligation, but not everybody who plays video games is a gamer like you or I. Capitalism requires businesses to diversify their scope in order to reach broader audiences and greater profits.
Keyk · #15I thought I was a fanboy but you-with wanting the PS and Xbox to die by Nintendo's hands-take the cake. Sadly my friend, no argument, regardless how good, will sway you.

Alternate reality. Real life is infinitely better than video games when it comes to "graphics".

Stopped reading in the bold.1.It won't happen-too many kids who don't appreicate gameplay-look at NFS for instance.2.They won't die-if anything at some point nintendo will die-it can happen and just might since nintendo have only games and a few cash in items like cards etc.Unlike back when they considered love hotels and laser shooting ranges XD3.Your obviously a fan boy.I'm one as well-however I'm more of a broad range, especially after the gc failed. As much as I love nintendo for being here for so long, I feel that unless they expand their range to not only include newbs to gaming, but veterans (it's mostly newbs) it might hurt...tehuber- Take into account that alot of people are buying systems second hand and games.Nearly everywhere I go I see a wii-but most are second hand-few people have news ones because it's cheaper to buy what they need, rather than a $429 pack with charger, and guitar hero 3 along with the console (and a few crappy 3rd party gloves). But real life is...sadly becoming uglier than games...Maybe it's because my eye sight is getting more f***ed by the day, but I rather see a r35 in gt5 than a real life one. That and in video games, anything within the pre-built physics can happen-rather than real life where you have to watch your step and such.

Okay, so? Profits come from game sales as well as console sales. In the end, Nintendo is still losing market share.

I can understand why you'd rather see a glossy, toy-like car in a video game instead of a dirty car that shows signs of use by someone other than you.Nonetheless, in terms of image quality, reality is superior. It's inherent to the difference between analog and digital.

...I just contridicted my point :([me=hYpNoS]hates it when he's tired[/me]And I'm aware of the profit loss, I forgot to mention..maybe because of the second hand system,s I reckon everyone might already have a wii already, or sold theirs and someone else bought it-those don't count. And these people choose to buy mostly second hand games for their second hand systems-like me for one.But if it keeps dropping, then I guess the hype of the wii has dropped.
