games that COULD have been great if only...

This is the thread where you list games that were critically panned or generally disliked and say why they COULD have been awesome.Lux-Pain: I just started playing this again 'cause I was in the mood for a visual novel. I gotta say, this game was pretty freaking cool...if only they hadn't screwed it up upon localization. I mean, omg, what's up with that CRAP translation?? It's a joke and unfortunately distracting enough to kill the game experience. I just dealt with it, pretending I was watching a badly done fan-sub anime, and enjoyed myself. But really, such a shame and really didn't help the fight to have more Japanese visual novels localized.Black Sigil: The game-breaker here was the absolutely INSANE encounter rate for annoying-as-hell random battles. Had I not used a cheat controlling the random battles and multiplying my experience, there's no way I would have made it through this game. Which is unfortunate to those who didn't, because when you get into it, this is a great game with a wonderful retro feel - I loved the Chrono Trigger-eeque look. Speaking of Chrono Trogger...Chrono Cross: When I played this I was in heaven. One of my favourite parts of these kinds of games is recruiting allies and this game had PLENTY of that. 44 characters in all I believe which, ultimately, was far too many. It didn't allow for any actual character development. Not to mention the convoluted-as-hell plotline. I shouldn't be left scratching my head after completing a game of this caliber, but this is one game you can spend hours online with, looking into the many fan theories trying to figure out just what it all meant. Also, basically demonizing the Chrono Trigger crew and rendering them all dead didn't exactly bode well with fans.Fire Emblem (DS): Playing this one again too, as I was in the mood for an old tactics game. Again, I really enjoyed this game and it was the first Fire Emblem game I every played (perhaps why I was easier on it having no preconceived ideas). I love recruiting the different characters but really, if you're going to remake an old game, besides updating the graphics you might want to consider adding a little bit more. This game was as basic as its predecessor and it didn't have to be - look at the Final Fantasy remakes!

Yu-gi-oh! 5Ds Stardust Accelerator: Battle Interface. If they used the old engine (in the old games) it could have been better.

No, some games are able to out stay their welcome. Games like CoD or most FPS' would be really boring if the single player was about 50 hours long. Especially if it doesn't mix up it's gameplay. Which CoD doesn't do.

There's a lot to pick, the ones I can think of...Splinter Cell: Conviction - The campaign was really short, no more than about 5-10 hours max. Everything else was incredible though.Final Fantasy XIII - The whole game was mostly linear, you do this, to that. No really optional things to do or events that you cannot change, etc. Still a fun game to play, just doesn't live up to it's name.Sonic games after 'Sonic Adventure 2 Battle' - Making Sonic entirely open and had a million of characters just destroyed the franchise for me.Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts - Does not live up to it's previous entries (which were one of the best N64 games I ever played). Should of stuck with the platforming. It was sort of worth the price though.Modern Warfare 2 - This game is good, yes. I'm still playing it for some reason. It's the game to play with friends; However the staff just needs to listen to the players more and fix the problems. World At War was good about glitches and exploits, had map packs, that was pretty good, we just need it in the modern series. One Man Army/Danger Close/Noob Tubes pisses me off. Commando pisses me off. 10th Prestige Modders piss me off. Modded controllers piss me off too. If those things were removed or taken cared of like the 1887's...it would be a way more satisfying game. And they should realize if one person has 4 bars and everyone else has 3 or 2, host should be migrated instantly.Mirror's Edge - The visuals, sound and concept are amazing, but the story was short and kind of sucked. They could have added a lot more to the game. The 'FPS' parts totally blew.Assassin's Creed (first one - WAY. TOO. REPETITIVE.

Just finishing getting the Speedrun achievements yesterday for Mirrors Edge, i was never good with the FPS part, especially since faith seemed to die so easily.

I totally fell in love with Nuts and Bolts, and I was glad that it was set in the Banjo universe (known characters, instantly likable, charming and somewhat funny). Although it's a lot different from Banjo, it's a lof of fun, and especially worth it for 40 dollars.MW2 to me could have been better if the multiplayer maps were smaller, and more focused. Along with gone through a beta to fix glitches and features that don't work like they're supposed to (host migration is bullshit, there's so many times an entire game has been kicked out because the host quit, and Halo 2 has done that better than MW2). Also the single player to me is unfixable, people may like it but I hate it. It's boring; monotonous; even though there's no infinite respawn, it sure feels like it; and the No Russian mission was just there to create publicity. Although the Spec Ops was decent fun.Agreed with Mirror's Edge, hopefully they do better with the second and third.

Bionic Commando
- The one thing that could of made it great was make it more open, doesn't have to be open world, just be more free. Or be like a Metroid-vania game where you need a power to progress through an area that you could've visited any time. It's a fun game, but the boundaries are very, very strict.Battlefield: Bad Company 2 - Great game, in fact, my favorite multiplayer shooter on any console by far. But the single player completely ignored the first game's story (BC1 ended with an open ending) and although there's still humor, the focus has been shifted to make it into a shitty Micheal Bay film like MW2. The single player's good but could've done with some canon and humor. Also multiplayer glitches in stats could be fixed too.I can't think of any others at the moment, so allfsdalfkwlaekgewgerg.

http://kotaku.com/5418000/ea-ceo-mirrors-edge-deserves-to-come-back-design-at-crossroads?skyline=true&s=x"You could say: This thing needs to be more traditional. It's first-person game. There's a lot of successful FPS products out there that do really well. We could move in that direction."Or [you could say]: This was never about guns. It was about its stark originality. Maybe we can back away from some of those [older] things… and emphasize the smooth play and puzzles and move it toward, if you will, a Portal."And they're both valid. Innovation is a lot of times about getting so far, stepping back, assessing and then moving forward. And that's what I'm proud is happening at EA every day."i doubt they will make it more FPS oriented, it would suck

EA CEO =/= DICEI doubt DICE will make Mirror's 2 about focusing on shooting (although I don't know why they made it a focus near the end of the game). In fact, most reviews of the game critisize the shooting portions and the portions that slow down the character.I fucking loved Mirror's Edge but to make the second game into something it's not? C'mon. There's room for innovation but that doesn't mean that to innovate the game more towards all FPS' that aren't Portal. But yeah, I don't think DICE will add more pew pew.

Mirror's edge 2- perhaps you could create your own character and play in a massive free run city- the ground levels are heavily policed so you are, on the most parts, forced to use the skyways. I would love a bit more pew pew actually- but in the style of small handguns; natawlie's right, some of the gun action slowed it down alot. So the whole fight system needs to be made more complex- first game broke the rhythm too much when you missed a grab...
Faith's story was kinda weak so i think this sorta thing is really the best way they could go- although it would be nice to have Faith as a separate character that you could work with on some missions. they could also fit in a multiplayer- games of tag, racing, even shooting and melee fights.

Final Fantasy 13- The cast of characters destroys it for me. Thats the only thing that keeps it from a "bad-ass" ranking.

^ AgreedAlso, FFTA2 - the first one was incredible but the second was severely lacking. The weird thing is, I can't quite put my finger on what it was that made it so inferior to the last one.

Oblivion - If only they hadn't messed around so much with what made Morrowind fantastic. No fast travel to break the immersion. No monsters leveling up alongside you making leveling up yourself feel pointless. Better storyline, less repetitive one too. Better voice acting. No psychic town guards. This was basically one of the most disappointing games I've ever played.

Yes, because walking for an hour to get to places doesn't get repetitive at all... And yeah the whole monsters leveling up along with you was great, because it still kept the challenge, instead of just running through and killing things effortlessly, that's boring. And then the voice acting was amazing I though, though there were one or two characters that did sound a wee bit cheesy. And yes, the guards pissed me off, if you break into a house they all magically know it.Dementium II: OK, don't get me wrong, the game was amazing, but it was too damn short. I know it's a DS game, but it could've been a little longer.

FF XIII was terrible I though. The characters are all so incredibly cliche (Though all the characters from VII and up have been) and annoying, but these ones just take the cake in terms of cliche. And then the story was hard to follow, I hate how your given a glossary. When you go to a movie, would you rather read a glossary while the characters say stuff and expect you to know, or would you rather have the characters tell you? And then the combat is just turn based combat, except simplified and cut down a tad. I only made it 11 hours in before I said "Fuck this game." and traded it in.

I never spent an hour walking anywhere in Morrowind, though I always made sure to take speed enhancements, perhaps mounts would have made it better. Anyway I was talking about the story, in oblivion you have to keep closing the Oblivion gates which were all exactly the same. I hated the monsters leveling up because there was never a challenge. The whole game was far too easy, there was no sense of realism as "hard" enemies were never hard in Oblivion. I still remember wandering into a daedra by mistake in Morrowind and getting owned, but by the end of the game I could destroy them. My work had actually paid off, unlike Oblivion where I could kill any enemy in the game from the get go and it didn't change throughout the game. Walking through any town you were et with the same three or four voices repeating over and over...gah!

Oh OK, I though you were talking about quality when you said voice acting, but yeah, you can't really blame them for recycling characters voices since there's a ton of characters in the game.
