Fighting Poverty!
K
The world is growing, we all know it and you all know it but what about those who are poverty stricken. In our world, people who are rich do not want to live beside the poor, But what about those who are poor and living in shanties. Many developing nations are taking steps to eradicate poverty as far as possible.... but the real poverty lies in the areas of Africa where the developement is hamepered and corruption is beyond possiblity. These nations are asking help and they get help instead the more powerful nations thrive the inner resources of the continent where mineral wealth is plenty but still not used because there is lack of technology. UN, UNICEF, WHO and all the others are making efforts but only in developing countries. Poverty is often seen in developing cities where urbaniztion is on hike and often becomes the show between the poor and rich. My mother is also setting up a community of people and donation camps for the redevelopement of the shanty housing and slums. The question is how are we gonna fight poverty?

The above image is of Dharavi - Asia's largest slum - in Mumbai which is an emerging financial centre of the world. But still the poverty remains, the goverment has made a plan for these slum dwellers which will be completed in 2013.

Kiberia, Kenya is also being developed by the UN.

I'm not sure, so many people think that other civilizations have kept up with society, but actually, most are in poverty. There's plenty of organizations here that take donations and give them to places in Africa and Asia, such as Unicef, World Vision etc. 15,000 children die every die from starvation somewhere in Africa, or is it all of Africa.. Not sure.
C
Poverty will always remain as long as there are greedy people :PWell actually you can't blame "ourselves" for such things as poverty, hunger, strife, greed, lust & all of the "bad" attributes of humanity. As these are just manifestations of what we call the natural laws of survival, where the weak are exploited by the strong. I know that's a harsh thing to say, but that has been the governing law that has kept every species on the planet going. The strong shall continue developing & the weak, shall vanish. But with us humans, that rule has been bended & twisted in such a way that we now compete with ourselves, so much so that "we" no longer see each other as part of the same species. It's so profound that we show signs of this "selfishness" as early as childhood, families consisting of several siblings constantly compete with one another for their parents love & attention, this is because of course of our "in born drive" to want to be the one on top.Now expand on that, move forward to adulthood, sure if the child was brought up to be "good & compassionate", circumstances will prevail that will lead him "to want the better things in life". The best education for his future offspring, better house, better car, better everything. Now say, even with honest living he gets all this things, in small ways he affects others that are less fortunate than he is. take for example food, sure he could have gotten the money to buy things from honest living, but by "selecting" the freshest foods & the finer furniture, he is depriving others with his purchases. Now I'm not saying there isn't hope, there is & that is if there was some solid system of rules, laws of governance that equally distributes goods & wealth. We're not there yet, but hopefully we do find that Utopian solution someday. Until then, we can each give a lending hand by giving aid even if there aren't any need for it, & of course by doing it out of your own volition :D

it's a problem on trying to get rid of poverty. in one instance it's more of a political situation for them where the government isn't doing a good job in maintaining a system [upgrading technology, offerring social welfare, reforms, etc....]. another instance would be that changes would also alter the nations culture and tradition and the social changes that they will face. third is the endangerment of the eco system in their nation as well as the planet. fourth would be the impact of other nations who based their trade with them.in africa for instance, you have a political system that isn't as strong or financed well enough to offer some of the things that euro or american nations have. one example would be roads or transportation. with transportation, people would be able to get jobs as companies are able to get goods in and out of a location quickly and efficiently as compared to a nation that doesn't have roads or transportation. with that, then you encounter ecological problems such as endangering or harming the animals that occupy the space. with all of this, peoples traditional lives would change and people may not like the effects of it because it's something different and it's something their not used to.

political corruption is another major issue harming the third world.

it's not all the politicians fault but the people themselves. i remember documentary and there was a time where the guy running for re-election obtain votes by simply offering a cup of ice tea. his opponent didn't have the finances to offer the cup of ice tea to the community. the guy who didn't offer the ice tea never got their votes. so basically people are stupid because we pick people that only offer us incentives.
it's really sad when you watch those documentary about "things that are to help people" [such as contraceptive use to stop aids,...] and the accounts of the peoples thoughts are very disalarming when asked about their opinions. it gives a feeling that there is no hope for these people.
C
You really can't say those people who accept bribes are stupid or foolish, in some cases, necessity is the one to blame.Bribery during elections is very often here in the Philippines & corrupt officials bribe the citizenry with bags of rice or PHp500 peso bills (about $12USD), but these people have to accept the bribe because they have no food to put on their tables, not once in a day for extreme cases even. And sometimes, armed hoodlums will even hijack ballot boxes so their "bosses" can win an election, that is why election officers often have to put their lives on the line just to have a clean election process.Funny thing though (well for me anyway), during elections, I'd go seeking these asshole candidates who bribe people to vote for them, whenever I find them, I would pretend to accept the bribe & say that I will vote for that asshole candidate, but during the actual voting process I vote for the "good candidates", the ones who fight fair & are truly dedicated to bettering our country, plus I get some pocket change for a short while :P .

I think political corruption in Zimbabwe bought Mugabe again as the president, while more three fourths of the population is under the poverty line.

third world countries should probably be taken over by a communists system. this way, everyone is pushed into doing one thing, to push the country up.
C
How rude ultra, though Communism has its good points, it still is a bit oppressive :PAnd with third world countries already suffering from the current political structure, Communism will probably piss the masses even more.
K
Actually if the third world gets taken over, its a boom for other countries because of their strong resources. These countries have more potenial than the other countries.
A
As they don't thrive on machinery for resources.

Disagree, The Philippines should turn its points into atleast a semi communism country, where everyone is expected to give a portion of their pay so that the government can give food to everyone.
Communism has strong points, expecially for under developed country, it gives the ease of control over a country, but many people fear communism just for a lack of freedom.
I'm all for a semi communismal state, with the other half being democratic, but as long as there is greed, that system wouldn't work out so well.... but It's my idea, and nobody can take it away from me, with my Idea, I believe that a semi communismal state is somewhat of a step to a utopia.
C
That's why Communism won't work for third world countries, greed. But really, are you willing to loose your freedom for the betterment of the state or nation? Communism can rob you of your basic rights you know, because the government will technically dictate everything you should & shouldn't do, plus in a political structure there are no gray areas, it's either Black or White. On one side Democracy with its value of freedom & the individual. On the other, Communism that values the state as a whole, the individual is non existent & therefore, freedom is regulated. I for one don't want that ;D

That's the reason why I stated it should be semi communal, also...they need to limit the congress's powers, they should be able to hold the seat for 4 years, and then they cannot be picked again, similar to Ancient Sparta's Ephors....
Anyways, Semi communism is good, if democracy backs it up, it provides a fair amount of freedom, and all the colors of the rainbow are there.
Think of it as an interracial baby (No racism intended) You can't make fun of it, like for example: Hah, you're....you're...What are you?
With an "Intertransitive" government, we can govern ourselves, and have a new output on life....I remember there was a country that switched governments from time to time to avoid corruption, but what I am talking about is a mic of two types, not something done like a federal republic, I mean something like a Communist-Democracy, think of hte possibilities! We actually have a chance to end poverty if we switch to a communist state for about three years!

Communism has one flaw. It fails to account for human nature; the desire to be better than others, to have more than others, whether it be material wealth, political power or whatever. To quote George Orwell:
All are equal, but some are more equal than others

One flaw is better than a thousand, it fails to account for human nature because theya re treated with equality, the power of everyone is about the same, and together they will provide a better enviornment for everyone in there...
(And if you;re talking about flaws... Democracy has a whole lot of them...)
As I stated, even three years will make a great impact of pverty within a densely populated area. But the leader would need to know what his/her people need, and not focus on spending it on theirselves, so greed would be an immense problem to it....
Human nature can be changed, we changed our primal instincts, so why can't we change our attitudes?

Did we? think about it, competition is a natural instinct.
