Earthquake in China

I received the following SMS from Patton today:

pattonTest 123. Hello from china, it is 13:18 [1:18PM] here and absolute CHAOS. Aftershocks every 30 minutes to a hour. Im beat tired, just giving you guys a report. Take it easy, pray for me - I don't care if you are religious or not; it is that bad

Patton lives in an earthquake prone area himself, so he knows what they can be like. If there are any aid agencies in your area collecting for this, and you can donate, then please do so.

Is Patton Chinese ?Almost 51,000 people have died their, here wherever you go you would see donation/relief funds people going around... recently I paid about 20 Euro in UK. That's what can pay in a foreign country.

Because a majority of the buildings which went down were schools, all of which were built by the same companies who skimped on materials and jumped hoops to make it cheaper to build, all in all it was the building companies fault that the buildings were not strong enough to withstand an earthquake.

But the earthquake was quite strong, I don't know if many buildings could stand it.

if they were properly built to withstand it, then yes they could have.

what about time? many of the buildings were probably old enough and their foundations were already weakened

thats what regular building instections are for. If they showed signs of weakness they should have been fixed.

how would you inspect the foundation if it is under ground?
