Download Problem - takes a lot of time
D
Hello,
when I'm entering the website to download a rom, it often takes a hell lot of time to begin the download, and sometimes it doesn't even load.
beside that, I'm getting very poor download speeds (~10 kBps)why is this happening? and how can I fix it?
Thanks, Dor.
L
it is most likely the load on our server causing the long wait time, and nothing really can be done about that. Poor download speeds are a lot harder to diagnose, can you post a speedtest?
D
could you give me a link to a site where I can make a speed test?
and where (in the world) is your server found?
L
www.speedtest.net is the most commonly used speed test site, and our server is in canada.
D

this would be mine.
400 kbps should be about 50kBps (8b = 1B)
but I get lower-then-10-kBps speeds.
L
the distance between you and the server, as well as the route the packets take, is also a significant factor.
D
well, yes, but I did make the test to Canada, so it's quite accurate.
S
Not necessarily, any two transfers, despite being from the same area to the same destination can differ lots of ways. First of all there are various carriers that handle the data, if just one of the carriers differs then the data might take another route and provide worse speeds. There are certain quality of internet bandwidth, usually it's priced according to that quality, such as perhaps $20/mbit you need. With our connection such quality bandwidth would easily put our monthly bills to $2000 and we simply cannot afford that. So while it might suck that we have slow speeds then it's the best we can do at the moment.
D
I understand that.
by the way, have you noticed that 80% of your download sources cost no points? :o
S
Yes, that's intentional, we only limit what we have to, we try to keep as much as possible free, so only files over 75mb would costs points. This value might decrease in the future or we might find other ways to decrease bandwidth usage should be not be able to afford an expansion.
