Breath of Fire 3 on epsxe

When i Battle and normal attack instead of just one number im getting 3 or 4 with the final number being the actual damage dealt or taken, is this normal or is it something with the emu?I have the game on cd but its unopened Lol and i don't have my playing version anymore (lost it a long ass time ago) so I can't remember at all if this is normal.
