Birdo: Boy or Girl?

I seen in a recent Nintendo magazine, "Is birdo a boy or girl".
I thought "Where better to ask than the internet?".
Present evidence!

I think it was a boy in the japanese games, then changed to a girl in the US ones, or something like that, i forgot.
