Lanturn is a real animal besides the fact that its a pokemon. There is a fish that has electricity and lights living in the ocean.

Gyarados is based on the legend of the fish that jumped through the dragon's gate and turned into a dragon. It destroyed stuff and the gods got angry and turned it into a flying serpent. That's Magikarp-->Gyrados.On topic: how about a polar bear; dolphin sounds good.
