3DS Gets Another Optional Peripheral
A

SummaryA specially-made steering wheel peripheral is to be released for Mario Kart 7 on the 3DS, with a surprisingly useful looking design that's made to work with the game's motion controls.The wheel has L and R shoulder buttons built into it, but the actual steering is controlled by the 3DS's gyroscope controls. That means it'll essentially work just like using the Wii Wheel with Mario Kart Wii.

The wheel isn't by Nintendo themselves but rather respected joystick maker Hori. In the apparently never-ending attempt to make the 3DS even less portable than it already is, it clips onto the back of the console.The wheel has L and R shoulder buttons built into it, but the actual steering is controlled by the 3DS's gyroscope controls. That means it'll essentially work just like using the Wii Wheel with Mario Kart Wii. However, shaking the 3DS around like that will mean you'll have to turn the 3D effect off.Although it's not a Nintendo product they've already incorporated the steering wheel into the Japanese marketing campaign for Mario Kart 7, where it'll sell separately for ¥1,280 (£10.50).Whether it'll be released in the West is unclear at this point, but given the prominence being given to it in Japan it seems fairly likely. Mario Kart 7 is released on December 1 in Japan and December 2 in Europe.Of course the steering wheel isn't the only 3DS peripheral making the news lately, with the controversial Slide Pad due to go on sale in Japan alongside Monster Hunter 3G on December 10. A Western release date is still yet to be announced, for either game or peripheral.

MetroStrange. First the slidepad and now this...I don't know what to think of the 3DS anymore.
This just makes me want to throw it away.

I am going to buy at that add to my collection

I might if it comes with Mario Kart. It's just like the Wii Wheel, but only for this game so far. :P
J
I think it will work on other race games too

Nope.
I usually carry my 3DS in my jacket pocket cause it's fall now, but with that AND my extended battery, I don't know what the hell I'd do.

I never actually put my 3DS in my pocket... so I am fine with this. Looks retarded but even if I had it, I would likely not use it. I would prefer an ergo grip. ._.;

Ten minutes later: 3DS virtual console gets Warioware Twisted and a new WarioWare Twisted sequel comes out.

i guess nintedo forget the definition of portable.... >.>
R
Actually, portability was not in the marketing, the 3DS has been ENTIRELY marketed as a "hand held" game system, and all forms of storage shown via their add campaign was in peoples backpacks purses/handbags, messenger backs ect. And that is portable. They are taking the 3ds in a similar direction as the wii, since it is essentially a Wii on wheels so to speak. Having goofy peripherals is a Nintendo thing now. :/ However I am saddened by the second slide pad attachment thats coming out... needs a AAA battery to function.
